Guidebook Gaffe

As announced high above the highway outside of Washington DC, Delta’s non-stop service from JFK to Kiev begins this June with roundtrip fares around $1200.

It remains to be seen whether this flight will feature the same demographic that currently frequents the lonely New York – Kiev route on Ukraine’s national airline, Aerosvit, namely Ukrainian-American expats fighting over the scrawny armrest with marriage-tour customers counting the hours until they can get their hands on that internet babe. Regardless, watching Delta promote the country as some kind of jet-setter destination – against a bright orange backdrop no less – is certainly a sight to behold.

With guidebooks to Kiev multiplying like proverbial rabbits, however, their PR manager should have checked with Lonely Planet before blanketing DC highways with ads: the giant of travel books issued its first guide to Ukraine in 2005.
