AC Santo Mauro Hotel
The Santo Mauro of the AC Hotels chain is one of the poshest new joints in Madrid – as well it should be, given that the 51-room hotel is a former embassy, and before that the home of a marquis.
It’s set in the residential Chamberi neighborhood, within an easy walk to the more happening Salamanca. Fortunately, the fusty quotient inside is pretty low. Plenty of antiquing and gilt, but it’s not that insufferable overstuffing so common to B&Bs; and other European mansion renovations. The rooms themselves are all clean, simple, contemporary modern, with prevailing whites and blacks contrasting nicely with the period building. There’s a hotel restaurant in the opulent library, and a comforting blanket of WiFi net access blankets the place. Rates start at €315 per night.
